‘Faking it’ with faux flowers

The Telegraph Newspaper recently featured an article on faux flowers which immediately caught my attention. I’ve always had a love for faux flowers and over the years I’ve noticed how realistic they have come to look. Long gone are the days when faux flowers are staple décor in takeaway shop windows, and investing in good a quality bouquet can transform the look of a room instantly.

The Telegraph reported that John Lewis noticed a real boom in people purchasing blooms of faux flowers for Mothering Sunday, a 71% increase on the previous year.

I’m delighted to hear that faux flowers are coming in to fashion as they really are a beautifully elegant alternative to the real thing, which in comparison are costly to replace regularly and an all-round no go for anyone suffering with hayfever.

Here’s my top tips for building your faux flower arrangement

  • Build your collection. You don’t need to buy them all at once. In fact, because they are hard wearing and long lasting you can start with 3-4 big blooms and a few smaller to create a day to day arrangement. Slowly build in faux foliage and assorted blooms and colours. Soon you’ll have enough for the next room too.
  • To keep your display seasonal buy 2-3 new blooms when the seasons change and over time your collection will develop in to a range for every occasion.
  • Wash your faux flowers upside down under a light shower and leave to hang dry to keep them looking their best.
  • Lightly spray the stems with room fragrance to add to the illusion that they are in fact real.
  • Shop around and stick to reputable retailers. When purchasing faux flowers, you get what you pay for.
