Original, hand-cast African bronze figurine
£135.00
Verdigris lady with hat and child.
The serene beauty of these bronze figurines perfectly capture everyday African life and are a cultural and aesthetic reminder of one of the oldest known forms of bronze casting in the world, dating back to the 3rd millennium BC.
Artisans in Burkina Faso cast each sculpture by hand, using the lost wax method – a skill passed down through generations. The artist sculpts wax, then coats it with clay and allows it to dry. Molten bronze is poured into the mold, melting the wax and allowing liquid bronze to fill the shape. Because the models must be broken away from the bronze that lies beneath, every lost-wax bronze statue is unique with slightly different characteristics of its own.
These delightful figurines have been chosen for their beauty, originality and authenticity of this rare, historical art form.
