Greek gods and goddesses

There are times we all want to add something to our home that has some meaning and depth. Or to buy a present for a loved one that is a little less frivolous, and a bit more cerebral – an addition that sparks conversation or demonstrates thought.

To that note, we are very excited to introduce our new range, created exclusively in Greece and custom-made from a studio in Athens. It’s a hand-crafted collection of home decoration items which strive to evoke the authenticity deeply engraved in ancient Greek cultural heritage through ethical trade and collaborative processes.

We just love everything about this brand – especially their bookends which are well and truly a ‘thinking man’s gift’ and will add weight –  literally and metaphorically – to any bookshelf or mantelpiece.

Showcased in the current October issue of World of Interiors magazine, this is Antinous, the last God of ancient Rome and reputed to be the most handsome, brave youth in ancient times. The classics will tell you that his beauty was so extraordinary that it was crucial it be captured and replicated with exactitude. Emperor Hadrian deified him and he became a God – one, who over the centuries, captivated all those who looked upon him. So we don’t really think it matters if you plonk a few Mills and Boon novels between these lovely bookends, (£94), because they still manage to add a touch of intellect to any literary collection.

Another favourite are the horse head bookends, (£75),  an image widely replicated from classical Greek culture. The head of one of the horses of Selene has become one of the most recognised and popular of the Parthenon sculptures, built as a monument to the goddess Athena. The horse (in Greek: ‘hippos’) was an important part of everyday life in ancient Greece, integral to a thriving economy and also a symbol of honour, energy and success. We can’t agree more!

We think everybody needs a Hygeia in their home as we move into the winter months. She was, after all, Goddess of hygiene and preventive medicine through cleanliness, wholesomeness and fitness. It may be ancient philosophy, but perhaps it’s not all Greek after all?
